First job
For the first engagement for all customers, we will require a 25% deposit when booking in all work; this will be refunded if the call is cancelled/rebooked with at least 48 hours notice by the client. We will also refund your deposit if we cannot meet a specific date due to weather or permissions, for example.
Site Surveys
Where there is a question mark regarding permissions to fly, or if, during an initial review, we decide we need to come out to access the flight location ahead of booking in the work, we will charge a minimum of £100 payable in advance. We will advise you if this is required.
Operational Authorisation
We operate drones within the approvals given by the Civil Aviation Authority. In built-up areas, we are permitted to fly a mini drone up to 250 g (A1). In areas in open countryside, we can fly heavier drones as long as we are 120 m from a building and 50 m away from any person not involved with the flight (A3).
Permissions/Health & Safety
To allow us to check for permissions, whether an area is safe to fly, and other requirements, we normally need at least 4 weeks' notice prior to any drone flight. This is to ensure all permissions and health and safety requirements are taken care of before the flight.
Insurance
We are insured for drone operations for professional indemnity & public liability. Our insurance complies with regulatory requirements for commercial drone operations.
Visual line of sight
We are required by regulations to ensure the drone is in sight of the operator or a spotter at all times; this is to ensure obstacle avoidance. We will recommend a spotter be present if there is a risk visual line of sight may be broken, for instance, by a building, to ensure the drone can bee seen at all times.
Weather conditions
We operate on a 10-day weather forecast for all drone flights. If at 10 days a forecast indicates the weather is not favourable, we will suggest postponing the flight. If at 72 hours there is no improvement in the weather, we will postpone the flight on safety grounds. Due to drones being electronic devices, they cannot be flown in rain, as this may damage the electronics. The drones also have a wind limit of 24 mph; we measure from the ground to 400 ft. If the wind exceeds 23 mph, we will not fly the drones, as it can cause stability issues. Depending on the location and risk, we may not carry out a flight if the GPS lock is not favourable in built-up areas or over bodies of water. This is due to the drones being fitted with an automatic return-to-home system that will activate if the drone detects a potential safety issue in flight, which can be mis-calculated with a poor GPS lock.
Airports & Airfields
The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) bans drone flights within 1.5 miles of a major airport and recommends not flying within 1.5 miles of an airfield. We can request permission from the relevant airport's air traffic control to fly within this area. The airport may impose a time slot or altitude restrictions to ensure our operations are within a safe separation distance from other aircraft. We will maintain telephone contact with air traffic control, and if instructed to land, we will do so. we will also keep a listening watch on the air traffic control frequency, for example, mayday or pan calls, to ensure we land to give an aircraft in an emergency or urgent situation room to manoeuvre.
Emergency Services
To ensure the emergency services can carry out their duties, if it becomes apparent the emergency services are attending an incident under our flight path, we will land. When operating near bodies of water, if it becomes apparent a Coast Guard launch is coming, we will land to give priority to search and rescue aircraft. If we see an Air Ambulance or Police aircraft flying low, we will land to give that aircraft priority.
